Behind The Wheel

I LOVE Depeche Mode. Seriously. I loved them before I knew who they were. One of my uncles would often play their music around their place when I was little. And one of my favourite songs of theirs has always been "Behind the Wheel."

I LOVE Depeche Mode. Seriously. I loved them before I knew who they were. One of my uncles would often play their music around their place when I was little. And one of my favourite songs of theirs has always been "Behind the Wheel." So imagine my absolute delight when, in 2014, two of my favourite metal bands, Dillinger Escape Plan and Deftones (or at least Chino Moreno), delivered a BLISTERING, bombastic cover of the song during DEP's set at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards. Seriously, this cover has always slapped to a point where I can't listen to the original without hearing Chino's haunting, unhinged shrieking and Greg Puciato's amazing harmonizing background vocals.

Now don't get me wrong, the original sounds like a foreboding build-up to something that never pays off, and it's that tension that makes it amazing, but to hear DEP and Chino PAY it off like the absolute fucking ANIMALS they are? OOF. Just OOOOOOOF. The only crime here is that this version was never released, so you can only ever watch the live version on YouTube. But y'know what? Here. Go do that. Watch it for yourself, and yes. That is blood on Greg Puciato's forehead. If you've never seen a DEP show before, that sort of thing (much like the subsequent firebreathing) happens a lot.
